From Google’s X Lab, which has produced Project Glass and the Self-Driving Car, comes Project Loon a way to provide internet for everyone in the world. They are going to do this by having a network of Balloons that offer will offer WiFi, in a low cost and eco friendly way. This looks like a plan straight out of the movies and basically they are implementing the movie Up, but instead of old man being tied at the end the “string” they have WiFi hotspots. It’ll be interesting to see how this project plays out, and their motives for doing it are great, so here’s hoping that they can accomplish their goal.
Each balloon can provide connectivity to a ground area about 40 km in diameter at speeds comparable to 3G. For balloon-to-balloon and balloon-to-ground communications, the balloons use antennas equipped with specialized radio frequency technology. Project Loon currently uses ISM bands (specifically 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands) that are available for anyone to use. They are calling it “Balloon-Powered Internet” and it’s going to be tested first in New Zealand on June 16th.
